It's time for another edition of Dro's Corner, presented by AutoZone! Time to take a look back at Week 12 in the UFL!
General Thoughts of Week 12
Patriots Stun Jets? - The Patriots got their first win of the season, and it was a big one as they were able to defeat the AFC East leading New York Jets 37-34. In a game that presented a lot of momentum changes, the Patriots came out on top when kicker Stephen Gostkowski was able to knock through a 43-yard walk off FG. Jahvid Best provided the spark for the Pats offensively, gaining 177 yards and a TD on 25 carries. The win is a sigh of relief for New England and their fans, as they escaped from a winless season. With 5 more games left in the regular season, the Patriots have a chance the end the season on a high note, and they can if they play like they did verses the Jets.
Another Shootout For Atlanta? - It seems like the Falcons have been finding themselves in a few shootouts over the past few weeks, as they experienced another against division rival New Orleans Saints. The Falcons were able to put away the Saints 48-45 in a game that saw New Orleans battle back. Down 41-24 in the 4th, the Saints were able to cut the score to 3 after a Jonathan Stewart 78-yard receiving TD from Vince Young, and a 40-yard INT TD return on the Falcons' following drive. But just like earlier in the game, the Falcons would pull away just as the Saints got close. Brandon Boutte would rush for a 39 yard TD to put Atlanta up 48-38 with 1:56 left in the game. New Orleans would fire back with a score (Bush TD, 39 yard run), but it would not be enough. Impressive showing from the Saints, but Atlanta did just enough to come away with the victory.
Bills Tied For 1st? - With their win over the Steelers, they sure are. The Bills were able to prove that they can play with the big boys, as the came away with a 34-31 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Buffalo fell behind early in this one, giving up a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter. The Bills would not let that get them down though, as they finished off the 1st quarter with a TD, and 10 more points (Spiller TD, 87 yards; Lindell FG) in the 2nd to go up 17-14 . The Steelers, however, would add 2 FGs before the half to go into the break with a 20-17 lead. In the only score of the 3rd Quarter, the Bills would tie the game at 20 with another Ryan Lindell FG. The Steelers would add a FG of their own in the 4th to take the lead back, but it would last long. The Bills would put together a drive, capping it off with a 9-yard TD pass from Brown to Loften. With Buffalo now up 27-23, the Steelers would lose the ball on a fumble as Buffalo's W. Darter would take it in for a 35 yard TD, giving the Bills a little breathing room with the score now 34-23. Pittsburgh would ultimately score and get the 2-point conversion, but it would not be enough as they drop a game to the Bills. Now with both the Bills and Jets sitting atop the AFC East at 7-4, next week's matchup between these 2 teams will definitely be a must-see game, as it will decide who takes the lead in the division. Should be a good one!
A Texas-Sized Upset? - The Houston Texas were able to defeat the Indianapolis Colts at Reliant Stadium in "Game of the Week" fashion. Down 27-13 in the middle of the 3rd, the Texans would put it upon themselves to make a comeback. Jacoby Jones would take a punt 65 yards for a TD, leaving 0:30 left in the 3rd quarter. 18 seconds later, Rico Ash would pick off Peyton Manning, taking it in for a 35 yard TD to tie the game at 27. The Colts would take a 30-27 lead after driving down the field and knocking in a FG. The Texans, however, would put together a drive of their own, capping it off with a 2-yard TD from Steve Slaton, which eventually became the game winning TD. The Texans kept their playoff hopes alive with the win, and provided a setback for the Colts, as the Jaguars (7-4) are once again creeping up on the division leaders. The AFC South will be interesting over the next few weeks.
Momentum Shifter? - If you happened to see the game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins, you would probably know what I meant by that phrase. The Vikings sped out to a 24-0 lead over the Redskins. Just when it seemed like everything was in hand, the Redskins put up 34 straight points before the Vikings answered with a TD with 0:53 left in the game. The Vikings, however, would lose the game in heartbreaking fashion. This one has to hurt the Vikes, as it seemed that they were in control of the game. While it may not have been a perfect game for Redskins QB Andrew Parris, he definitely proved his worth in this one. Combine that with an outstanding 2nd half defensive effort, and you got a Redskins victory.
Dolphins Win In Possible Game of the Week? - Outstanding game between the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals this past week, as the Dolphins were able to slip by 24-21. The Bengals would jump to a 14-0 lead early, but the Dolphins would later answer back with 2 TDs of their own to tie the game at 14 going into the half. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Cincinnati would take the lead when Carson Palmer hits Aaron Scott for a 51-yard TD pass. 15 seconds later, Miami QB Pat White would hit T. Lucas for a 79-yard TD pass to tie the game at 21. Neither team was able to score again until late in the 4th, when the Bengals would fumble the punt return, setting up an eventual 34-yard game winning FG for the Dolphins. This game was definitely a good one, but it definitely has competition from the Patriots/Jets and Colts/Texans games for Game of the Week.
Did I Forget About The Bears? - Nope, I didn't. Congrats to the Chicago Bears, as they were also able to get their first win of the season against the Detroit Lions. Down 30-27 with 1:55 left in the game, the Bears would strike 15 seconds later when Jay Cutler found Johnny Knox for a 75-yard TD. Chicago succeeded in fending off one last effort from Detroit to win the game 34-20. Congrats to Frank an his team on a hard fought win!
