UFL 2013-14 Rookie Draft Preview
Player Profile
Name - Hassan Hardrick
College - Boston College
Size - 6'2 204lbs
Position - WR
Projected - Top 10 to Mid 1st round pick
The 2 time ACC Player of the Year, Hassan Hardrick, has decided to leave school after his Junior season. Can you blame him? He broke every Freshman receiveing record while at Boston College when he had 84 receptions, for 1,402 yards and 16 touchdowns and became the first ever True Freshman to win ACC Offensive Player of the Year.
His Sophomore season was cut short by an ankle injury that sidelined him for half of the season. Before the injury however, in only 5 games, he was already at 36 receptions for 783 yards and 8 touchdowns. One would be safe to assume that he would have had another near 1,500 yard season baring the injury. In his Junior season, he really came out on a mission, he amassed, 97 receptions for a ridiculous 1,689 yards and 22 touchdowns. He won his second ACC Offensive Player of the Year Award and was 4th in the Heisman Voting.
Analysis:
Release: Great initial burst off the line of scrimmage. Long-strider with good build-up speed to eat up the cushion against corners playing off-man coverage. Excellent size and strength to defeat press coverage. Good use of hands to ward off defenders and has enough lateral agility and burst off the line to gain an immediate advantage.
Hands: Gernerally very good hands, but at times, inconsistent. He drops some of the easy ones while catchings all of the tough ones. Has the ability to extend and make the highlight-reel receptions. Willing to run routes across the middle and take a big hit if needed to make the catch.
Route running: Made nice gains in this area between his Sophomore and Junior season. Possess elite speed and explosion out of his cuts. Is able to get away with good, not great, route-running because of his ability to blow by a Corner. Much stronger than most collegiate receivers and won't be pushed around by NFL defensive backs. Deceptive deep speed to challenge over the top.
After the catch: One of his best assests. Great agility to elude defenders in open quarters and the acceleration to run away from defenders. Rare strength to break free of tackles and gain yardage after the catch. Good vision to set up his blocks downfield due to experience as kick and punt returner.
Blocking: Pretty good blocker downfield but nothing great.
Intangibles: Very tough kid, took a severe ankle injury to sideline him. Highly decorated prep athlete rated the No. 3 overall prospect in the country by some scouting organizations. Involved with several local community service projects including the Santa America Foundation and local Optimist International club.
Compares to: Braylon Edwards, only faster - Has fantastic speed, size, and ability to go up and get the ball in traffic. Doesn't have any of the off the field issues that Braylon has. No attitude here, this guy is a true team player.
Verdict: If you miss out on The Freak Julian Watson in the draft, Hardrick could be a good second option for you. He has a similar skillset and the only real difference between the two are their size. Seeing as the UFL is such a pass heavy league I would not be surprised to see Hardrick go as early as Top 5, but, I have him slotted somewhere around #10.
