Being such a great player for such a small school makes my job very difficult in trying to analize and evaulate how good players like OLB Marvin Williams actually are. Its very hard to determine if he really is one of the best Linebackers in the draft, or, if he is simply getting by on his pure athletisism. My early Big Board had him rated as the best overall linebacker available, however, after some furthur evaluation of game tapes and some one on one talks with some of my sources, I now have Williams projected to be drafted somewhere in the Middle of the 1st round. The OLB from tiny Valdosta St University is a very athletic, albeit undersized linebacker who needs to find the right system to be successful in the NFL. He plays at top speed and is capable of making big hits, but he has below-average awareness and gets engulfed by big offensive lineman due to his underwelming size. He has great potential, but I feel like his best chance to be successful is most likely with a team that runs the Tampa Two and can take advantage of his speed and agility.

    Analysis:

Strengths: Good overall athlete with a nice quick burst. Solid agility allows his to change direction quickly. His speed allows him to play sideline to sideline. Very aggressive tackler and loves to make the big hit. Has great mand and zone coverage skills. Runs well with tight ends and running backs in man coverage. His agility allows him to avoid cut blocks and get into the backfield very quickly when blitzing. Effectively weaves his way through the interior of the line and has great timing on his blitzes.

Weaknesses: Undersized and really struggles to fight off blocks. Does not have great balance and is knocked to the ground easily. Overpursues and struggles to break down and square himself up for the tackle. Struggles to work his way through traffic. Does not take good angles on inside runs. Tends to lead with his shoulder rather than wrap up ballcarriers. Does not read misdirection well. Will takes plays off. Does not get into a ready position fast enough and is often caught off guard by the snap.
