UFL 2013-14 Rookie Draft Preview...
Player Profile
Name - Taqwaun Foley
College - Florida State
Size - 5'11' 220lbs
Position - FS
Projected - Top 15 pick
Its not very often that you find a Safety with this kind of speed. Taqwaun Foley from Florida State University is by far the fastest Safety in this draft. If your division rival drafted WR Julian Watson, your going to want to take a long hard look at Foley. At 5'11' he is a bit undersized for your traditional Safety, but, his 220lbs packs a punch. Oh, did I mention this guy will be the fastest player on the field on any given Sunday? There are few players in the league, if any at all, that even approach his raw speed on the football field. What he lacks in overall awareness, he makes up for with his mind numbing speed.
This guys speed and quickness could cause him to be the 1st Safety taken in the draft. I'm not sure if I would take him over FS Carlos Bailey, I feel like Bailey is the most complete and best overall Defensive Back in this draft, but, Foley's speed might induce someone to reach a little a snag him earlier than expected.
Read & React: Very Good key-and-diagnose skills. Very aggressive in run support, sometimes hurts him in pass coverage, but, he is usually able to make up for any misstep because of his tremendous catch up speed. For the most part, he understands his role as the last line of defense and generally takes good angles to minimize big gains by opponents. His mistakes typically occur when he overruns the play due to his over aggressiveness.
Man Coverage: Much Faster in a straight line than he is quick in a short area. He is blessed with Rare recovery speed. Is a rangy defender and can blanket any deep receivers.
Zone Coverage: Controlled aggression in coverage makes him well suited for a zone scheme. Ability to see the action and react quickly. Loses a step in transition, but accelerates smoothly. Good change-of-direction skills. Reliable open-field tackler. Intimidating hitter over the middle.
Closing/Recovery: Rare straight-line speed for a man his size. Reads the action quickly and has great burst to close. Times his leaps well and uses his long arms to bat away passes. Would rather go for the big hit than compete for the ball. He only had six career interceptions, three of which were in his freshman season, despite 49 career starts.
Run Support: Has played deep in a zone scheme in the past, but flashes outstanding ability in run support. Good key-and-diagnose skills. Can elude blocks, but is willing to take them on and can discard due to his upper-body strength and long arms. Big hitter who runs downhill toward the line of scrimmage.
Tackling: Reliable open-field tackler. Breaks down well to make the secure stop. Explosive hitter who loves to intimidate opponents. Lowers his shoulder into the ballcarrier and can separate him from the ball. Sometimes misses tackles he shouldn't as he has a tendency to lead with his shoulder on big hits, failing to wrap up securely.
Intangibles: As previously states, this guy is fast. So fast, that I'm almost at a loss for words when describing how fast. I mean literally, I have never seen a Safety, that can run like this guy. He's like Deion Sanders that can tackle. Yes, he's that fast folks.
