    Frank 2.0's 10 Things I Think I Think Empty Frank 2.0's 10 Things I Think I Think

Post by frankhateme Wed Apr 06, 2011 11:29 pm

In the Peter King vain, here are a bunch of thoughts that I think I think about the UFL and football in general.

1)I am enjoying the UFL a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. When Finz suggested joining this league I thought that both he and the UFL were nuts. The web page was ridiculous (in a good way), the articles were awesome, the rules were extensive and i thought that it was going to be too much work. The reality is that both Finz and the UFL are nuts, but in a great way. I love the passion that people have and all the work they put into this league. The games have been great to play and the league hasn't been work at all. It's been a hell of a lot of fun and I look forward to it every day.

2)Why does it seem that Money Matt is flying under the radar? All the chatter has been about AFC North, the Jets, Jags, Colts and Broncos. Sure Matt has already lost twice as many games as last season, but he is the champ. Why so little love for the champ?

3)This reminds me, Mikey, what are the odds on winning the UFL bowl. I want to put some money down on money.

4)Why is Warren Moon trying to represent Cam Newton's best interests. If I'm Cam Newton, I don't want anything to do with a guy that has been charged with drunk driving a few times and assaulting his wife.

    5) AFC North is the toughest division in the UFL. With everyone sitting at 0.500 or better, its hard to argue with it.

6)Who is SilentRiot? It has been 3 or 4 days since he took over the niners and still haven't heard from him. WHAT ARE YOU ABOUT?

7)Jersey needs to change his avatar for a couple reasons. 1) My wife thinks i'm having an affair with some girl in a chat room and 2) It is harder for me to check the forum at work.

8)I'm going to get fired. I spend too much time at work on the UFL forum or on AIM.

9)I hope the players lose their antitrust case. How much money do they need? They already get half the revenues in salaries. I'm not anti-union, but I can't ask my employer to open his books and show me how much he makes so I can get a bigger salary. The Packers are publically traded. We all see their audited books and it shows that they made $8Million in 2010. There are teams that make less (i,e. jags, bills, bengals) and teams that make more (i.e. skins, cowboys, bears, NY teams). You play a game and get paid a boat load to do it. Shut up and play. Well, enough of that rant.

10)My non-UFL \ football thought of the day...does anyone watch women's college basketball. I mean really? It's women's basketball. Its not like they are victoria secret models running around in their bras and panties. Why is it on TV?

I watch to show my son what fundamental basketball skills look like. Men's game is exciting but lacks fundamental skills that young players should develop. Girls don't rely on pure athletic skills they have to work on the fundamental part to become great players.

I think it's a little short sighted to assume it's only the players that are the problem with this lockout. I haven't been on top of it as much lately but I know previously the points of contention were for retirement type issues and the 18 game season. I don't know that it's the players that want more money selfishly but rather the players wanting to protect themselves in the event they're forced in to a early exit via injury or something else. I also don't see a problem with a little transparency. In the end I'm spoiled in Pittsburgh with the Rooney's because they take care of their players and shoot things straight. Art Jr. And Dan said months ago "we don't need to make any more money, we're making enough" and they are of the opinion that the owners are equally to blame. Art. Jr also said that during the extensions not a whole lot of discussion actually took place, just a bunch of standing around and indicated he was disappointed.

Both sides are to blame in this one.

    Nice read Frank.

Only thing I have to chime in on is the NFL Lockout thing...

    You said...

"9)I hope the players lose their antitrust case. How much money do they need? They already get half the revenues in salaries. I'm not anti-union, but I can't ask my employer to open his books and show me how much he makes so I can get a bigger salary. The Packers are publically traded. We all see their audited books and it shows that they made $8Million in 2010. Well, enough of that rant."

I totally agree that these players make tons of money, however, the owners make even more money (obviously)... The reason I side with the players on this whole ordeal is because:
    1) The Owners are the ones that backed out of the current CBA
    2) The Owners are the ones who are saying the current CBA will causes financial problems down the road, which is fine they can say that, however, they are unwilling to show "the books" to prove this... When you say, you, can't ask your employer to see "the books" in hopes of getting a raise, the NFL situation is allot different... The way I, and allot of other people are "perceving" this, is that the owners don't want to show "the books" because they are in fact not losing as much money as they are trying to tell everyone... I'm fine with them saying they are going to lose money later, so they need a new deal now, but, you can't ask the players to "take your word" on it, considering $1 billion dollars is on the line...
    3) as a Cleveland Browns season ticket holder, I feel like the owners make PLENTY of money... $800 dollar seats, $8 dollar Beers, $5 dollar soft drinks, $5 dollar hot dogs and brats... I know they have many things they pay out, but, I don't believe for one second that these owners are not raking in the cash...

I think allot of people see that the NFL is the most popular game in this country. Most stadiums are full every sunday regardless of weather or not a team is good or bad. Its really hard to try and sell people that you are going to "lose money" when the only thing people see is a business that is EXTREMEMLY successful...

CeeGee,the one thing you are forgetting is that not all teams are created equal. The 1 team in the league that has its books open to the public is the packers. They are a publicly traded company and therefore need to have audited financial statements released to the public. For their year that ended March 31, 2011 the team made $9.8 million. That's it for a team that sells out every home game and whose fans travel well so they get a good payout on their road games too. The reality are that there are teams that don't come anywhere close to what the Packers draw (Jags, Bengals,Bills, raiders, bucs, etc). GB was 9th in attendance last season. Some of these other teams avg 30-35% less in attendance so you can imagine how much less they make. There is obviously the opposite end of the spectrum with Dallas, Washington and the NY teams, but the reality is that there are teams that aren't making "that much" money. We are talking about millionaire players and billionaire owners, but at what point is it too much? You mentioned the price of beer and seats, but half of that goes to paying player salaries. The small market teams are the ones that wanted out of the CBA because they weren't doing well financially. Maybe we have a different take on things, but if i owned the packers, i would expect to make more than $9.8 million in a year i won the super bowl.

I agree Frank. You would think that a team that has such a great fan base and consistently sells out games and won the super bowl would have made way more than $9.8 million...

That being said, if other teams are in fact losing money, WHY WONT THEY SHOW THE PLAYERS THE BOOKS TO PROVE IT??? If its a known fact that teams are struggling financially, wouldn't it benefit them to reveal their information??? Thats the sticking point I think, and its a damn shame that these two can't come to an agreement.

Its not as big of a deal right now, but, In September, when Week 1 doesn't happen, then Week 2, then Week 3, people are going to march on the NFL Offices and some will probably outright boycott the NFL (i mean they wont GO to the games, i'm sure everyone will still watch)...

Me personally, here is what I'm going to do...
    - if they (the NFL) comes back with an agreement for an 18 game schedule, and still wants to charge me FULL PRICE for Preseason games, more money for season tickets, on top of missing regular season games I'm not renewing my season tickets after next season. The only reason i say "after" is because these bastards are making us season ticket holder "re-up" right now, before we even know whats going to happen. They said they will refund us if there are games missed for this coming season...

    What a joke...

The sad thing is, this same thing is going to happen in the NBA after this season. I hear that there labor issue is even uglier than the NFL's current situation and that the NBA will most definetly have a shortened season in 2012/13... Sad
